Dana Point is a southern Orange County coastal city with a landscape of soaring bluffs and sheltered coves. Dana Point is named after writer and politician Richard Henry Dana Jr., who declared it the most beautiful spot on California’s coast. Development of the community began in the 1920s, and some properties from this period can be found in the Lantern Village and Capistrano Beach neighborhoods, though most of the homes in these and other neighborhoods are much newer. The Strand at Headlands’ modern gated community is comprised of spectacular custom-built homes with panoramic views over the ocean and Catalina Island.
 
Dana Point has nine distinct beaches, including surf spot Capistrano Beach, Salt Creek Beach backed by a seven-acre grassy park, and popular recreation destination Doheny State Beach. Dana Point Harbor is the launching point for ocean cruises, dolphin and whale watching tours, fishing trips, and other activities on the ocean. The annual migration of California grey whales is celebrated over two weekends in March with the Festival of Whales. May’s Doheny Blues Festival brings three stages of live music to Sea Terrace Park. In September, Ohana Festival on Doheny Beach features performances from some of the biggest names in music. The oceanfront Monarch Beach Golf Links has a public course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. with awe-inspiring views.
